Homework & Practice

Homework

Homework can be used to extend what is being learned in the classroom at home, if it is done the right way. I often do not assign separate homework due to the fact that I know that many of my students will not get the help they need at home. I know that many of my student's parents are either unable to read or they struggle with basic academics as well. They typically have a spelling rubric that is assigned on Monday and due on Friday. This rubric consists of different ways to practice their words. There are three different point sections, with mulitple choices under each and the must complete one from each point section. The other homework that they have is anything that they don't finish in class. Homework is effective when the students have payed attention in class and have help at home, so that they can complete the assignment. If they have much of it correct after doing it somewhat independently, then it has been a success and we can move on. If they have gotten a lot wrong, then we need to revisit it before moving on.

Practice

I mostly have my students students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts. Many of my students are cognitively impaired and need as much practice in this as they can get. They need to have their basic facts down to make sure that they are able to function in real life. An example of when they would need this is when they are shopping so they can make sure that they recieve the correct change back. We keep track in the classroom on a chart. Every time they pass a level in rocket math, they get a sticker on the chart. I also keep track in a binder. I decide what they need practice in based on their IEP goals and their test scores.

Flashcards

This was an extremley easy site to use. I would use this sight with my after school tutoring group as well as my own classroom. They are working on their basic facts and this is a brilliant way to have them practice the facts that they are having difficulty with. I would us this before I give them time on the fun math game sites.
